During the Renaissance, the Italians created the word Sprezzatura. It means the ability to disguise what one really feels and thinks behind a mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance. For many years, I worked as a performer -- I learned firsthand what this experience was like. What can appear effortless and blissful to the audience is in fact laborious and painful to the performer. These drawings are my attempt to depict this type of expressive suppression -- the perception of external calm amidst internal turmoil.
